Been thinking more about visibility lately, the seen and unseen. In particular, who are the people I value that I haven’t been seeing, and have yet to photograph? Reviewing the rolodex of ideas in my head, one that stuck out, was documenting Mr. Miller, a man who has lived on my block for nearly 50 years. The thesis was to give him his flowers for all the wisdom his imparted on me over the years. while he was hesitant and unsure at first when I pitched him the concept, he later opened himself up to the possibilities. mindful of all his concerns, I made sure to meet him where he was at. Throughout the documentation, we spoke about the changes in the neighborhood. His love for music, specifically—jazz and reggae, his admiration for interior fixtures and the importance of conscious living. As we wrapped, he mentions “you made my day with this.” And it was in that moment, I was affirmed he felt seen. That’s all I wanted him to know.
